Eagles All-22 Film Review: Jordan Davis Will Be Hugely Important For Defense

With the 2022 NFL Draft over, it’s time for some movie theaters in this year’s rookie class. I will try to reach all players and some UDFA’s in the coming weeks. Obviously there are a million scouting profiles so this is just my opinion, but I’ve tried to back up everything I’ve said with movie clips. I’ve watched a lot of all22 on some rookies, but I can’t share those clips on my own Twitter accounts (or risk getting banned), so I’ve used a few other accounts here. Let’s go!

+ Impressive lateral movement and reach for a big TD, can close out external runs. He is a great defender.

+ Fast feet, moves a lot lighter like a man. The athletics are out of this world for someone his size.

+ Just huge frame and strong anchor.

+ Has real power and drives lineman back to quarterback, especially on the rare occasion when he is not double teamed.

+ Can ‘stack and throw’ attacking linemen and make them look crazy at times. Can throw attacking lineman out of his way with insane power

+ Does he ever miss a tackle? When he gets his hands on you, it seems over.

+ Has an absurd ability to shoot through holes when not asked for 2gap given his size.

+ Believe it or not, he can even chase QBs when they try to play out of the structure.

weak points

FYI – A lot of the weaknesses are very hard to show on film, as they don’t have to do with what he did on the pitch, but more with what we didn’t see.

– His biggest weakness is conditioning and if he can handle more snaps. We all know by now that he only played 38% of the snaps last season and we obviously need him more.

– Limited pass rush moves, didn’t get a chance to see him ignore responsibilities and go after the quarterback in 3rd place.

– Doesn’t get as consistent inner push as you would expect from a man his size. Plays high and sometimes loses leverage.

Jordan Davis is an absolutely fascinating player to watch and project forward. You all know how athletic he is and how good the metrics are, we won’t go into that here. I just want to focus on the band and what I saw of him.

Those who criticize him and early call him an early defender are absolutely right. He just didn’t get a chance on 3 . to playrd consistently down, which is when you can ignore the responsibilities of the gap in the run game and really go after the quarterback. He just didn’t get the chance to do that. Whether that’s because he can’t do it, or because a fitness issue means he can’t play as many snaps, I don’t know. From his tape, however, I can’t believe that someone with his first step and strength cannot help to move forward from fast-paced situations.

Jordan Davis will be huge (literally) important to the Eagles defense. We know Gannon wants to play a lot with 2 high safeties and we know this means lighter boxes and this will lead to the attack letting the ball run. That’s why it’s so important in the modern NFL to have a base DT that can play a role in stopping the run. Even if Jordan Davis never develops his pass in a rush and only plays on early downs, he can still be absolutely vital to the Eagles’ progress.

I think Davis will walk into the NFL as a very good starter on early downs. I don’t think it will be long before Davis is seen as an elite defender with an early down run. He’s not the finished project and does need some coaching, but the talent stands out on film and you can clearly see elite traits in him, in terms of the speed and strength of a man of that size.

As for projecting that he’s moving forward, I think he’s going to have a chance at 3 . to playrd as he progresses in his career. I think he will have the strength and speed to take on attacking guards and I think teams will immediately want to double him which will help free up the other defensive tackles and give the EDGE defenders one on one on the outside.

Davis is one of the most exciting defenses to come into the league in a few years and I’m excited to see him develop for the Eagles. I think there are legitimate concerns about him as a player, especially his lack of playing time and whether he can handle more snaps physically, but the advantage is sky high.
