Free PS Plus games for May 2022 are better than April, but June can top them both

A new month means a new selection of PS Plus games (and more about other services). Many hoped that the May games would cash in on April’s roster, and while that may not be quite the case, the PS Plus Free Games for May 2022 are at least a little better. Until June 7, fans can claim FIFA 22 (PS5/PS4), Tribes of Midgard (PS5/PS4), and Curse of the Dead Gods (PS4).

But the big change is on the horizon. PS Plus subscribers will be able to upgrade in June 2022 and get PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium. At the highest level, players can not only try some top PS4/PS5 games for free, but also get access to 700+ games across the eras of PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3† Also throw in the PlayStation game demos, and PS Plus Premium packs a lot, even if the cost is debatable.

PS Plus Free Games for May 2022 vs. April 2022

But before we look at next month and why fans can expect really good PS Plus free games in June 2022, it is worth looking at the past few months. May 2022 is better than April 2022, but it still falls into some common trappings. FIFA 22is, for example, a sports simulator. These usually don’t do well on subscription services simply because they are annual releases and diehard fans usually pick them up at release, not waiting months after. In the meantime, Tribes of Midgard and Curse of the Dead Gods are good games, but their appeal is limited. If anyone doesn’t like their unique graphics, dungeon crawling mechanics, or roguelike features, then these two games might not be for them.

There is at least more general appeal there than with the PS Plus Free Games for April 2022† These were Hood: Outlaws and Legends, Slay the Spireand SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. Kill the spire is arguably the best game of the bunch, but at the same time, the card mechanics will keep many players from trying it out. Hood: Outlaws and Legends is a multiplayer game, which is mostly good for subscription services, but doesn’t really click as it should. And then there is SpongeBobtaking the whole Nickelodeon connection aside, the original game is better than the rehydrated version of it, and that’s saying something.

While PS Plus subscribers recently got two lackluster months (although the entire PS Plus in 2022 has been strange), there is an important reason to expect that the free PS Plus games for June 2022 will be really good.

Why PS Plus Free Games for June 2022 Could Be Really Good

In short, Sony has always been very good at leveraging its PS Plus service as a hype builder when needed. Not only were there remakes or games on the announcement prior to sequels, but the entire PS Plus was used to market the PS5. Not that it needed more, but PS Plus was undoubtedly helpful in selling the PlayStation experience.

In the months leading up to the PS5 release, PS Plus was on a hot streak with good month after good month. With the release of the PS5, big PS5 games have been added to the PS Plus serviceseveral games were added in early 2021 and eventually slowed down to its three games.

Its effectiveness in promoting the PS5 cannot be underestimated. And so it makes sense that Sony would use its PS Plus Essentials free game selection to bolster PS Plus itself. If fans see good games on PS Plus Essentials for June 2022, maybe a few months later, the PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium Levels even more attractive. If the entry level is exciting, many will think that the highest cost level is worth it. Sure, it can sell itself with the backward-compatible library and all, but it’ll have to keep presenting new additions to keep subscribers on board. And the best way to do that, anyway, is with the free PS Plus games.

Why might the free PS Plus games for June 2022 not set a new standard?

It would make sense for Sony to go down this road, but it’s also a double-edged sword. There is concern that if this were to happen, it would only be temporary. It is in fact the law of diminishing returns. The better the PS Plus games are at launch, the more subscribers it is likely to retain or gain. But at some point, the price and effort involved in the PS Plus Supplies level won’t be worth it, and Sony will really have to push the higher levels.

So in the long run, the free monthly PS Plus games may suffer for the higher tier. It remains to be seen, but if the free PS Plus games for 2022 have proven anything so far, it’s that not every month is going to be good. Sony has reason to make up for it before June and maybe a few months after, but please Xbox Games with Gold and Game Passthe free PS Plus games could suffer from a more interesting subscription level.
