What happened

The original poster (OP), a 23-year-old man, called the scenario a “desperate situation”.

He has been dating his girlfriend, a 22-year-old, for seven months. She has a scar on her neck and the OP said she “hate” being asked about it or having to explain the “story behind it”. Even the Redditor doesn’t know how she got the scar, and he waits for her to feel “comfortable” enough to tell him.

The OP’s girlfriend has met his family a few times before, and he says his mom and aunts asked her “of course” about the scar, claiming it was mentioned about three or four times in a few hours. In addition, it was brought up again at dinner and again during a movie.

“It got annoying, and my girlfriend would look awkward, and I could just see the question itself bring her grief,” the OP said. “I told my mom to stop asking such sweeping questions about the scar, and every time she said, ‘Okay, [I] won’t ask, I promise,’ but then she’d turn and do it again.”

On Mother’s Day, the OP’s girlfriend went with him to attend dinner with his mother. “We were sitting in the living room and my mom is going to ask my girlfriend about the scar again, this time with a bigger audience because the whole family was there,” the Redditor said.

The OP’s girlfriend said she preferred not to talk about it, but the Redditor’s mother “continued to corner the woman” and asked her questions in a yes or no format.

The Redditor sat next to his mother and he “forced” a “loud fart”, in an attempt to take some “pressure and attention” from his girlfriend and get his mother to focus on something else.

The OP continued: “I was like… [‘Whoops,’] and the family started laughing. Mama turned to me and gave me a mean look. It got awkward [not going to lie]but I was desperate and couldn’t really yell at my mom to stop and argue on Mother’s Day, so I thought of this instead of making a scene.”

However, the OP’s mother pulled him into the kitchen and reprimanded him for his actions after telling her he did it on purpose. His mother called him “childish,” adding that if he didn’t want her talking about his girlfriend’s scar, he should have said so. However, he insisted that he had talked to her about it.

The OP and his girlfriend left, and she “couldn’t stop laughing” once in the car. “Unfortunately, [my] my father was also upset and said I was behaving badly and childishly in front of the extended family and told me to grow up,” the Redditor added.

Comments from Redditors

More than 700 comments poured in and people overwhelmingly support the OP in the situation.

One Redditor doesn’t think the OP is to blame, adding that his mother “repeatedly” broke an already “stated and perfectly reasonable line”. They wonder how she thought the OP was “childish”.

“No,” they said. “Her claim that you should have told her is ridiculous. Not only did you repeatedly tell her to stop, but your friend told her. Who cares what you have to say about it at the time? The only relevant opinion was spoken in space, and your mother kept insisting. Really, if she does it again, why stop farting?”

Another user admitted that the OP made their day, and that the commenter’s wife gave her “enthusiastic approval” adding, “Your dad told you to grow up? Your dad should be congratulated for having you right raised, and you and your girlfriend were the only adults in the room.”

One Reddit user thinks the OP’s mom is really the “childish” person here, and admits she’s really just “a toddler” while re-posting the question multiple times.

The hypocrisy of her calling you childish when she’s actively being cruel is just awful.

“And not having the emotional intelligence to realize how invasive a question is,” they added. “Love how you farted the tension! And it sounds like it helped your girlfriend too. Keep supporting her. NTA [not the a**hole]but your mother is definitely TA.”

While one Redditor gave the man an “A+”, he added that it is an “impeccable divisional tactic”. However, they believe that the OP’s mother is “incredibly rude to push his girlfriend over it” when the woman doesn’t feel comfortable discussing the situation.

“The hypocrisy of her calling you childish when she’s actively cruel is just appalling,” she added.

Another person wondered what the OP might do in the situation, and they don’t believe it’s okay for his family to be so rude to his guest regarding a delicate subject.

Also, a fart can be childish, but your fart on this occasion was hilarious!” they said. “It’s good that your girlfriend was cheered up by it.

One Redditor thinks the OP “took one for the team,” adding, “And the people in your family, as you describe them, are fucking idiots. Your girlfriend is lucky to have you.”

While another Redditor called the flatulence “the right move,” he emphasized that the OP’s mom and aunt are clearly the holes in the screenplay.
